How Does Sanctification Work? How Does Sanctification Work? by David A. Powlison
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

We are all tempted to oversimplify. We long for one “key” truth, a “secret” principle, the foolproof technique, some life-changing experience that makes everything different from now on. If only there were some one thing to make Christian growth certain! But there is no single key>

There is a struggle for some Christians and I am one of the treadmill kind. What do I need to do? I can go from one extreme to the other. This text is not one to put you on the treadmill or to live a life of passivity but to engage in the God Almighty through sanctification. There are 5 factors for change to incur, for the heart to be moved – They are truth, suffering and struggle, wise people, and God that changes the heart. Do we run from these 5 variables that challenge our heart, or do we embrace them to purify our hearts.

Sanctification is a purification process that is only done by God himself, his word, suffering, and his people. I think understanding what sanctification – our part and God’s, makes us mindful of how we prepare our hearts for sanctification. This is where I personally struggle the most and I found this text most helpful. Our guilt of not doing enough or the right things can paralyze a heart but what I found most helpful is the simplicity of my motivation. Am I driven by guilt or by hunger?

Powlison leads his readers/students/lovers of the word an a invitation to know the Lord and to examine the workings of our broken hearts. I highly recommend.
