A climatic thriller with many twists and turns. A great debut thriller for this author and I will be looking for more. Two neighborly couples that share a wall in a upscale neighborhood. One couple has no children and the other a 6 month old baby girl. Marco and Anne are invited to Cynthia and Graham’s house for a birthday part for Graham. No babies are allowed and the babysitter that Anne has hired, suddenly cancelled. Marco convinces Anne that leaving the baby at home while they go next door with the baby monitor will be ok. They will easily check on her every 1/2 hour.
The narration is already tense as Anne is struggling with this decision among other things. There is a build up and then an explosion. A nightmare of the worst kind. As the couple is anxious to leave the party and on their way home, they notice the front door open and their baby Cora gone.
The authorities are called and the climax builds. The narration is done with several voices; Anne who suffers from depression. Marco who is struggling with his business and the investigator who knows something is not right with the couple next door. The author was unique in how she uncovered and developed her characters. It was a un-layering of motives, fears, and who can you trust. It becomes a read you can’t put down.
